LESSON BREAKDOWN:
Lesson one: Body image literacy
In this lesson students will explore the concept of body image and how depictions of bodies in the media can impact how we think and feel about our own bodies.
Lesson two: The impact of body image
In this lesson students will explore the impact of body image and understand the role our body image has in our life. Students will discuss a fictional case study which highlights some of the ways our body image can impact our quality of life.
Lesson three: Exploring body diversity
In this lesson students will learn about the concept of body diversity and how this relates to body image. They will explore some of the factors which can impact our body size and appearance and use critical thinking skills to interrogate some of their own ideas around body size that may contribute to weight stigma.
Lesson four: Health and body image
In this lesson students will explore the complexity of health and learn about the categories which can impact our health, including the social determinants of health and health behaviours. They will discuss how our body image fits into this bigger picture, and use critical thinking skills to examine media depictions of the concept of health.
Lesson five: Body image advocacy
In this lesson students will explore the concept of advocacy, and discuss tangible ways that we can be advocates both for our own body image and also the body image of others who live in bodies that don’t look or function like our own.
Want to know the impact?
Included in your Scheme of Work is a link to two optional online surveys - a teacher perception survey and a student survey, as well as printable resources to help you monitor the impact of this scheme of work internally.
As part of the Scheme of Work we offer a personalised (anonymised) data analysis service - you help us measure our impact by completing a short online survey and asking your students to do the same as part of home learning to consolidate their knowledge, AND we’ll analyse the data we obtain about your setting and let you know the impact your teaching of these resources has had on your students.
NOTE: This SoW was updated in May 2024. If you purchased the scheme prior to this date it may not contain all of the above. To receive the most up to date version, please email us at hello@bodyhappyorg.com with your proof of purchase and we will share the updated scheme with you free of charge.
WHY BODY HAPPY ORG?
There are a few body image teaching resources out there, we know, we’ve seen them all. So why should you invest in ours? Here at Body Happy Org we do things differently. Our focus is on culture change, so advocacy is front and centre of what we do. Body image isn’t a “me” problem, it’s a “we” problem. And helping children and young people be friends with their own bodies means nothing if it doesn’t also include helping them to think about how they treat the bodies of others too.
Our resources don’t just help children and young people think about individualised concepts such as “How do I feel about my body?”. They also help them think about wider societal concepts such as representation, advocacy, discrimination and bias, as well.
What’s more, our resources aren’t made by a team of academics who’ve never set foot in a school classroom. Our resources are made by a team of teachers with deep knowledge and first-hand experience of the subject matter, including teaching it. Our resources have also been proofed and collaborated on with our wider multi-disciplinary team, which includes academics, health professionals and campaigners with lived experience of the related issues too.
We are a small but mighty non-profit, not funded by big business or powered by the motive to pay big bonuses or dividends to shareholders. We’re a social enterprise, which means our mission is social impact. And that starts in your classroom. When you purchase from us not only do you get top quality teaching resources you won’t find anywhere else. You also get the warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing you’re supporting an organisation helping to help the kids in your care be friends with their bodies.
