Media Literacy Lesson: Upper KS2
Media Literacy Lesson: Upper KS2
HELP CHILDREN IN UPPER KS2 DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS WITH THIS ENGAGING AND INNOVATIVE MEDIA LITERACY LESSON FOR UPPER KS2
This lesson can be used as a stand-alone lesson or as an extension lesson to the Upper KS2 Body Image Scheme of Work.
Media literacy can be defined as the ability to access, analyse, evaluate, create and act using all forms of communication (National Association for Media Literacy Education, (NAMLE)). Our modern world presents numerous and diverse media platforms to students, and engagement with these platforms is high and ever increasing.
Media literacy teaches students how to engage critically with the barrage of information they consume, whether that be online, on television, radio, in print and more. These skills are useful for many other subjects, including Literacy, Science and Information Technology and, as such, this lesson will also complement an English, Science and ICT curriculum, as well as your school’s PSHE provision.
✔ Surpass Ofsted requirements and evidence your commitment to child wellbeing, safeguarding and inclusion with this lesson plan designed to PSHE Association and Government Equalities Office guidelines.
✔ Meet national curriculum requirements with ease - no time consuming planning or expert experience required to deliver these sessions.
✔ Adapt to any curriculum and complement your wider school approach to health and wellbeing, inclusion and anti-bullying.
✔ Complements curricula for core subjects including English and Science, as well as ICT.
✔ Accessible for all budgets and supports the social economy - your download helps to fund other projects and initiatives that support student body esteem and wellbeing.
WE’RE A BODY IMAGE ORGANISATION, WHY HAVE WE CREATED A MEDIA LITERACY TEACHING RESOURCE?
In order to help young people build better body image, they need to be equipped to engage critically with the messages they encounter in the media around bodies and appearance. This also extends to the mass of (mis)information online around health and ‘wellness’.
Empowering students to evaluate such information will not only help their own personal self-esteem and body image but will impact the way they treat others too. This lesson will not only help students develop their media literacy and critical thinking skills, which are useful for all subjects, including English and Science. It will also help to improve their body image literacy, body image resilience and body image advocacy skills too.
